Yellow Star Grass (Hypoxis hirsuta) is a very small prairie flower with tiny yellow flowers that bloom in May. It is a rarer prairie flower and typically is found in high quality native habitats. The leaves looks like grass which is what gives Yellow Star Grass its name.
We enjoy planting Yellow Star Grass alongside other short prairie plants such as Hoary Puccoon, Pasque Flower, and Prairie Smoke. It does well along edges of a garden where it can be seen in bloom. It sometimes goes dormant in mid-summer but re-sprouts from a corm—or bulb—the next spring.
